Because the Squeezebox firmware natively decodes FLAC and does not natively decode ALAC (decodes on the Slimserver instead.)
I will be maintaining a mirror copy of the library at probably 192k AAC for use on my iPods. I solved my problem - the solution is to use Max on the Mac. Thanks!
