I must confess I'd done none of those things. I have now though! The new ticket is 75. I've attached the original FLAC file (bit of a struggle to find one under the 260KB filesize limit!) , the initial transcoded MP3 (using flac2mp3), then a (problem) retagged MP3 (also flac2mp3). The retagged file shows the "lost audio sync" problem in mp3tool whereas the transcoded one does not.
