It shouldn't be.  Digital audio extraction is a fairly slow process.  I
don't know the numbers offhand, but I suspect that USB 2.0 should be
faster than even the quickest extraction speeds possible from a CD
drive.

But if you get into the habit of modifying the tags of files that
you've just ripped, then you may find it faster and more convenient to
rip to a local hard drive.  Working in a tagging program with local
files will be faster than working with the files stored on an external
USB drive or a network drive.  This is what I do - rip to a local
drive, modify and add additional tags, then copy the album folder over
to my network server.
