I agree that's a little anal overkill. But I do it anyway, isn't that par for hobby :-)
In some ways flac to the squeezebox makes most sense because it can "checksum" the result. Just like sending zips via email instead of raw files. But if it detected a decoding error would it tell you? or just smooth it over. There little error checking with WAV. Don't know if SlimNet adds it's own packet checksums. But we know there is a bug (lack of horse power with current FLAC code) with 24/96 FLAC at high compression that is very audible. So who is to say there isn't subtle audio problems with 24/48 highly compressed FLAC. Using this FLAC decode on server (transcode to wav) also completely solves this "bug" with 24/96 on SB3 and I can keep things at high compression in FLAC. Also is it possible (I really don't know) jitter might be less if the processor isn't multi tasking decoding on top of all it's other time critical duties? The less it has to do the less it could do something wrong. It doesn't really hurt or cost anything.
