This may not help you, but I have vague plans for a plugin to make this
easier, by making connections between artists and playlists.
I don't know when I'll start work, but it would give a webpage with
loads of checkboxes, like this:

artist4 [ ] [ ] [ ]

so you can make many-to-many associations between artists and
playlists. It might even automatically add newly discovered tracks to
appropriate playlists, based on the artist...
