Don't they mean that DVD-ROM drives can be used to rip CDs?

DVDs usually do not have Redbook CD tracks at all. Both the sound and
audio are contained in .VOB files with other files (.IFO?) acting as
indexes. This is a very different structure.

There are methods for getting this audio into WAV format - when I was
on Windows I used this guide:

http://www.glump.net/dokuwiki/howto/audio_only_dvd_ripping_guide

It uses some older programs but worked well.

On Linux, I'm using dvd:rip, which can do everything in one step, but
it's been unable to rip in 24 bit.
