'ning all, I've posted a couple of times before but this is my first since actually owning an SB3, and before I get started may I say it frickin' *rocks*.
So here's the thing: long ago, when my collection was about half what it is today, I ran the 'normalize' linux utility over the lot. IIRC this writes (ID3) RVA2 tags for volume adjustment. Later, when I discovered the replaygain script for Amarok (my software player of choice), I ran it on my whole collection, writing both track and album APE tags. So now I have some tracks which have both ID3 and APE tags for volume adjustment. Initially, I set my SB3 to use "smart" gain adjustment, but found that tracks from some albums were inaudible when played in a mixed playlist or in Random Mix. (When playing the album alone, or using album gain mode, the volume was normal.) Looking at the individual tracks, I saw that their track-gain was often, say, -60 compared to album-gain of -1.5. I haven't had this experience playing the same files in Amarok, and I assume this is because the replaygain script will use its own (APE) tags in preference to ID3 tags. I assume therefore, that the SB3 (or slimserver) does the opposite, favouring the ID3 tags when present. Unfortunately, "normalize" doesn't provide an option to remove its tags, so in order to be able to use smart gain settings, I may need to re-rip the earlier part of my collection. I'm just posting (a) as a warning to others, and/or (b) in case someone can (i) suggest a Linux tool for sanitizing the ID3 RVA2 tags or (ii) refute my assumptions completely and tell me what's really going on. Thanks in advance =) -- Havin_it ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Havin_it's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12661 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38239 _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping
