More sage advice! Thanks very much. If only I'd had the patience to
wait intil I was further along on the learning curve. I really did try
to educate myself regarding file formats and tagging, but no doubt I
dove in too soon and just started ripping like a wild-eyed Jack the
Ripper. Live and learn, I guess.

I think things are going to be OK from here. This is the process I
have settled on: Rip to flac with dBpoweramp, applying ReplayGain
track and album tags as I rip. After my butt gets numb, I rescan my
music files into Slim Server. When that is done I then back up to an
external USB drive.

One issue I'm still wrestling with is genre tags, but I figure I can
always go back through and change those if I ever decide how I actually
want to do them. Music is so hard to categorize anyway! What exactly
is "pop" music when you get down to it? Anything that is popular? And
there is so much crossover from one genre to another. For instance, are
the Eagle now a country band? Are the Dixie Chicks rock, pop or
country? ...Yikes, it's enough to give a neat-freak an ulcer!
