Seems a bit odd to me, as well. What you've described sounds to me like the way some people use ARTIST. If you are just about to start ripping, the one strong piece of advice I will give is ... don't lock yourself in to a particular model by leaving out or overlaying data. Whatever else you do, make sure you capture COMPOSER, CONDUCTOR, etc (I would include GENRE) even if you're not sure how you are going to use it at first. You can always use mp3tag to move the data around between tags later.
