One SqueezeCenter-specific side effect is that the "New Music" section of the Music Library is based on file modification time. Some users don't like old music showing up in the "New Music" section just because they modified some tags, so they like that option in mp3tag and similar taggers. I'm sure there are other reasons why someone might not want to update the modification time, but that's the main one I can think of.
