I will reiterate this advice.  I have four drives in various computers
in my house and all of them display various levels of fickleness when
it comes to ripping disks.  One is clearly superior to all of the
others.  I will be a very sad man when that drive dies.  The other
three generally work well for regular loading and accessing of data CDs
but ripping CDs (or DVDs) gives them fits.  Unfortunately, the drive
manufacturing business has become highly commoditized.  Even Plextor
drives are now just usually rebadged crap.

And as someone else suggested, try starting your rips at the lowest
speed.
