I'm tagging via mp3tag (a mix of mp3 and wma files). I've got no album level date fields, just one "year" tag per track.
So I would tag the Thin Lizzy album with different years on each track - all my "greatest hits", "various artists" and other albums with added bonus tracks are done this way. SqueezeCenter comes up with a year for each album, but I'm not sure how as I've never been very interested in this year. Obviously for most normal albums all tracks have the same year tag so the album year is fine. For best ofs, the year is of no consequence to me. When I go to a particular year and play it, only the tracks with the appropriate year are played. So going to 1980 would result in the whole of the Chinatown album being played, but only the two tracks Chinatown and Killer On The Loose from The Adventures Of Thin Lizzy compilation. Which I think is what you want.
