Yes it would be nice to convert and check.
Although you are doing your conversion the slower and at first glance,
more painful way - thats the way I ended up doing mine as well.  When I
converted with dbp I had errors on about 80 tracks spread across about
40 cd's.  I found it odd as each of the tracks seemed fine in iTunes. 

Then as I thought about it I began to think that it was possible there
were in fact errors in the ALAC rips as it never complained or said a
rip may not be accurate or reread a disk because of errors.  

It then became apparent it was more of a p.i.t.a. to go back and rerip
the unconverted tracks and retag so they match than to rerip everything
and be sure it was accurate.
