I left iTunes behind as well - in the same way you did and for many of the same reasons. A year later I spend more time listening, and less time trying to make sure it all works with the newest iTunes release.
As for the ipod - Rockbox works for me. Battery life is a little shorter but not having to convert to lossy format works great for me.
