A straightforward way to tell if you need more memory (in XP and probably in V) - open Windows Task Manager - go to the "Processes" tab - from the menu, View / Select Columns - check the "Page Faults Delta" checkbox - click "OK"
Now the Processes view will show you how much each process is going to swap on a somewhat dynamic basis. IMHO anything over about 50 means you need more memory. Also - I'd suggest going to 3G or 4G (yes, you can only address about 3.5 with 32 bits, but the extra 1.5 is still useful). I've been using Win X64 (essentially a workstation-ized version of Win2K3). I love it, but getting drivers is a pain.
