I'm having a little trouble getting my tags to produce the desired
effect, and I hoped others might be able to point me in the right
direction, please.

Specifically, I'm looking at albums with more than one artist. Not
Various Artists in particular (i.e. different artist for each track) but
more along the lines of collaboration albums: multiple artists, but the
same set of artists for each track.

I'm currently doing this by using a separator ('&') in the Artist (TPE1)
tag, but it has some drawbacks.

Does anyone have a better method, please?

For example, the album "Bird and Diz", by Charlie Parker and Dizzy
Gillespie.

I have this tagged as:

     TALB Bird and Diz
TPE1 Charlie Parker & Dizzy Gillespie

and I've told SC to treat '&' as an Artist separator. This gives me most
of what I want: the album will appear under both people in the Artists
view, and there will be no entry there for "Charlie Parker & Dizzy
Gillespie". Fine.

In the SC web gui, whenever artists are shown elsewhere, e.g. playlist,
now-playing, they will appear thus: "Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie".
That's ok, if not perfect (in that it isn't what it says on the album
cover, for example).

But in some contexts, e.g. in Squeezeplay (and this presumably on the
SBC although I don't have one here), iPeng, etc, only the first artist
in the list is shown, e.g "Charlie Parker". This is now getting to be an
irritation.

A slightly different example illustrated the general case, where I want
finer control over how the artists are split up into Artist entries in
SC, but without mangling the TPE1 tag, which latter I would like to see
*displayed* as is.

e.g. I want all my SRV albums to appear under "Stevie Ray Vaughan" as
Artist in SC. But some of the albums are by SRV and Double Trouble.
Again, I handle that by having a TPE1 tag of "Stevie Ray Vaughan &
Double Trouble". This results in separate Artists sections for SRV and
for DT; I don't really need both, but it serves the purpose of ensuring
they all go under SRV, along with his "solo" albums. But, again, the
Artist isn't printed fully on Squeezeplay/SBC and iPeng.

A related case is where I don't even want multiple artists sections, but
I still want to separate the Artist. e.g. "B.B.King & His Orchestra".
I'd like this to appear under B.B.King in SC, so that it's with my other
BB albums, but I don't really want to have an Artist section for "His
Orchestra". And I'd still like the Artist to be printed in full when
playing the album.

To paraphrase, I'm almost saying: I want TPE1 to be parsed and separated
when it comes to associating entries under an Artist in the database,
but I want TPE1 to be treated whole as a string when printing the Artist
in a playlist, or now-playing screen.

I can see that the Various Artists compilations could complicate matters
here, although a key difference there might be that each track has a
different TPE1 tag. In my example, all tracks generally have the same
TPE1 tag, but that tag includes multiple artists.

Does anyone have a better way to do what I'm trying to do? Perhaps with
some more subtle tagging, or use of more esoteric tags?

Would having *multiple* TPE1 tags be an idea? With the first one
containing my preferred printing format, and the others there solely to
associate albums with artists in the database?

e.g. for my first example, could I have all the album's tracks tagged:

     TALB Bird and Diz
TPE1 Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie
     TPE1 Charlie Parker
     TPE1 Dizzy Gillespie

and no longer need to use '&' as an artist separator in SC; perhaps?

thanks much for any comments.

cheers,
calum.
