Well... by default without ARTISTSORT Eric Clapton would appear under E not C... by setting ARTISTSORT to "clapton, eric" he will appear under C which is what many (most?) people want. "ARTIST" then controls what gets displayed whilst "ARTISTSORT" determines what order things are shown in.
