I'm pretty sure this part is also possible to get fairly correct because I've personally done an implementation in Custom Scan regarding it.
Writing is a completely different matter though, IMHO it's to easy to destroy music files since it isn't that uncommon that Squeezebox Server needs to handle strange taggning combinations. As an example, I personally realized a few weeks back that I accidentally had put ID3 tags in my FLAC files. I don't envy the guy that is going to implement POPM write support and write the logic that does this correctly independent on which kind of taggning format combinations the user has used earlier.
