I'm not trying to bring up old news and revive the "Lossless is
lossless" debate but while I was messing around today trying to figure
out why iTunes ALAC are only playing at 24/48 and not 24/96 I did some
conversions and discovered:

Each time I transcoded between FLAC to ALAC to FLAC my file became
shorter. All tags were retained (no artwork was on the file in the
first place). The first round of FLAC -> ALAC reduced the file size by
3.3% and each subsequent round dropped it by between 0.003 and 0.014%.
The drop didn't occur in any particular order. In fact the 2nd round
was the smallest and 3rd was the largest, with an average decrease in
file size of 0.0071%.

I'm not surprised that the first round dropped something, but even the
small decrease on the 2nd thru 7th was a surprise.

I know we're not taking big numbers here but where did my bytes go?
