Because unless you have changed the settings, that is what it does by
default.

You can check what format is ending up at the player easily. For
example on the Radio play a track, go to Now Playing and press the "+"
button. Scroll down to and select "More info", one of the bits of extra
info is the file format that it has been transcoded to.
