I was thinking the other day that it would be fairly easy to support raw
passthrough of AC3 and DTS files in their native format without any sort
of FLAC wrapper. This would also make it easier to do things such as
auto-disabling of the analog outputs, forcing of 100% digital volume,
disabling of VU meters, and so on.

However there is one big problem that would probably be a show-stopper
to most people - there is no easy way that I can find to tag a raw
AC3/DTS file. It would actually be fine to stick an ID3 tag on the
front of one, but I'm not sure any tagging tools recognize these files
nor would they let you write an ID3 tag to it.

Another option would be to still use FLAC but if you had a special tag
in there such as AC3=1 or DTS=1 it could change the behavior of the
player.

What do you guys think? I would like to remove the need for using FLAC
because that's a rather painful process currently, but it would require
some app to be able to support tagging these file types before anyone
would want to use it.
