Wonderful! I followed your instructions and it installed perfectly under Ubuntu 10.04! I installed the six dependencies and ran the installer script as root. (I used Synaptic to install the dependencies instead of a command line.) I didn't test -puddletag- fully. I didn't try to write tags 'cause my NTFS partition was mounted read-only. Your software shows a lot of hard work. Thanks!
I'm using custom tags and puddletag shows their existence but their values are incorrect. Not trying to file a bug report, here. I've been struggling with my tagging effort which is overly obsessive. I'm rethinking my entire project. I notice your comment about some character sets causing problems. I encountered this writing Windows batch scripts. I never found a solution (yeah, batch language is pretty archaic) but I worked around it. I'm attempting to preserve correct spellings (Slavic, Cyrillic, etc) without resorting to Anglicizing them. I'm about ready to throw in the towel on that idea. You summarized my situation perfectly as you described keeping a Windows partition solely for the sake of running -mp3tag.- I never tried mp3tag under WINE, but I've used WINE for text editors . I think I will uninstall WINE -- it is a stain on my Linux system. The XP partition will probably stick around a while longer. I stumbled across a neat Linux music player called 'DeaDBeef' (http://deadbeef.sourceforge.net/) last week. It is similar to Windows' Foobar2000. I like 'em as simple as possible sometimes.
