Are you familiar with the term dynamic range? The volume control of the
amplifier controls the volume electronically at the pre-amp analog
stage. It has no effect on the digital data. When the replaygain is set
to low, the SB attenuate the volume at the digital stage by scaling down
the digital word. This way a 16bit word becomes zero-padded 16bit word'
which is equivalent to lower word length (14 bit or less). So by using
the "standard" 89DB you are losing dynamic range as the entire 16bit
data is no longer fully utilized

The best way is to alter the replaygain data by adding a constant value
of DB to all pre-set values. The replaygain standard hold have been
implemented differently. It should match all tracks volume to the
volume of the most loud track. The 89DB is way too low for 16bit sound.
It should have been 96DB !
