Just because you are paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

I only know about it because I was using Audacity to do needledrops
(record albums to a digital format).  It turns out there is a bug in
Audacity when run on Windows platforms that makes it look like you are
recording at 24 bits, but the recording is actually only 16 bits, with
zeros added to make it 24 bits.  I wasted many hours recording and
editing the files before I found out about the bug.
So it might not be a bad idea if you are undertaking a big project to
make sure the process is really giving you the correct bit depth. 
Maybe the difference between 16 and 24 bits doesn't matter to you, but
at least you should be getting what you think you are.
