With lower flac compression levels the server or the player needs less cpu power to decode the flac file, the trade off is disk space or bandwith. If your servers cpu and ram is marginal you may benefit sligthly by using less cpu, then the server can use it for other task, for example be reasonable responsive re you UI comands
and the file is still lossles, so it has the same information regardless of compression level. The Transporter had troubles in the past with 24/96 flac with to high rate, in thoose cases it was solved by going to -5 or less, many encode with the max setting -8 it saves very little discspace compared to -5 . So I use -5 for now ( I think this usually is the default level ) but the Touch itself does not have this problems it can decode any 2 ch flac file within 24/96 . On none of the equipment I have had these things made any audiable difference note that I use the digital outputs. -- Mnyb -------------------------------------------------------------------- Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub.
