JJZolx,

Thanks for the input, as I mentioned, I know the Discnum is
unnecessary, but I believe it is my Zune and its software that likes to
try to "fill in the blanks", so I choose not to leave them.

With all my music having essentially a discnumber of 1, it doesn't
matter to me, and it is automatic for me in MP3 Tag.

I don't use the TITLEFORMAT (in my ignorance, I've never even seen the
feature or value before), and I haven't really had any of the ugliness
you have suggested elsewhere. This is mostly because I've worked with
what works for me and have worked out the ugliness I have seen early
on, which is where setting the Discnum field came into being in my
setup.

I also think I am not too concerned about appearnaces as long as tags
are relatively right and organized correctly. i.e. the ugliness in
your example isn't something I find ugly. Heck, I am willing to put up
with track numbers 101, 102, 103, 201, etc anyway.

As for setting files to Read Only, while I've tried this, it is
inconvenient when I am often rating my music as I listen to it. The
Zune software for some reason thinks that the Discnumber field must be
filled in, so it often chooses to fill that in (along with composer
sometimes), and unfortunately, its database tends to be flawed with
respect to discnumber (inconsistancy in a single album).

As it is, I am in the process of separating the Zune from my Squeezebox
in terms of media files. I am converting all my media to FLAC and
leaving the MP3's for my Zune and any future protable devices I may
have. This will allow me to remove the Discnumber field if I determine
that it is a problem.

I will admit that the replay gain field for albums is not something I
fully automate. It is more of a case of using the drop down menu to
choose the most conservative result when I am dealing with a multi-disc
album. Selecting all tracks on such a set gives you the ability to set
all tracks to one of the values present in any one track. Since I am
only dealing with the album gain, it is usually relatively easy (and
most of those are 2 or 3 disc sets).

Setting Replay Gain constant across a multidisk album usually goes with
whether I want to combine the discs anyway. I do it when it is
concerts, double albums, etc. I am less likely to combine albums into
one if the discs are separate albums (i.e. a complete discography),
outtakes, etc.

Ultimately, I try to use what works for me, and if people are finding
difficulties as previous posters have, I suggest what I chose to use
for solving the problem. There is nothing like having a lot of
perspectives since each person has their own ideal solution.
