Sorry rather belated response but.... Artist is a vague concept because it mixes up the creator of the work (ie composer) witht the performing artist who are involved in the work, and then confuses Composers bands soloists etc . The problem is that some people think that the only person who matters in Karajan's 1975 beethoven 9 is beethoven, and some of them think it is is Karajan. Then you have the problem that if you list everyone who is involved in the entire work which in the case of an opera can easily run to 20 names, then you have to be careful about whether to put in the first names as well to avoid confusion. Using artist tags just compounds and mixes up all the various differing priorities and policies exhibited by different people and record companies. Besides if there are 6 people listed how do you know which one is which. If you are tagging Conductor, Composer band and soloists you don't need really need artist at all. In practice we are stuck with these tags but I don't think they are at all helpful If you are searching soloist "Richter" you probably mean Sviatislav not Karl. But if you enter Richter under artist to serach tracks you will probably get both (and others). All of this comoinds the problem that names are inconsistently recorded (Bach, Bach JS, JS Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach, Johannn Sebastien Bach each with and without dates). So generally it is better IMHO to at least narrow the selection down by searching composer/band/ conductor or whatever. Obviously album artist is even worse.
