SBS uses a application called "faad" to decode the AAC/MP4 files for
older (i.e SB3, Boom) players.

This is an officially licensed decoder (not reverse engineered) from
AudioCoding.com for the standard ISO/IEC AAC format. Perhaps Apple has
made some proprietary changes from the international standard.

To see if faad has a problem with the Apple produced AAC file run the
program from a command prompt with a "-i" parameter and AAC filename
and see if faad produces any error message.
