I kind of remember MP3Gain working with MP3 and Wave files (it didn't
write tags for Wave). I do believe there are other programs that do
similar with FLAC.

Since I converted over to FLAC a few years ago, I haven't really been
doing this at all, so I don't remember. However, I do use MediaMonkey
for my PC and PMP integration, and it seems to have a similar feature
that works for all files types. I've never actually tested it.

I used to make compilations a lot more often in the past when weeding
out albums from my collection, but now I just weed out albums
completely. Pandora and Spotify can make up my need of individual
tracks.
