Thanks Mr Sinatra. Been a bit busy but I had some time to fix this today. I want to do it on Linux and I want to do it automatically. I found a player called Amarok that can download art and installed that. Then into Amarok I installed the add-on script 'Copy All Cover' and ran it. A rescan of squeezeboxserver picked up the new artwork. Amarok found cover art for about two thirds of my music. Amarok is available in Synaptic Package Manager on Debian (and I presume Ubuntu and other distros). The add-on can be found here: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Copy+All+Cover?content=138284.
