Carriage returns

Greetings from Down Under,

When I print a line to a file on the server I cannot avoid sending an
unwanted carriage return even if I specifically use only a linefeed in the
print instruction as in

         print RECORD "What a nuisance. \x0a";
         
 Is there any way of instructing perl to stop this nonsense?
