I've used the backtick operator quite a lot and not found
any problems, except that it sometimes "forgets" to remove
its temporary files from the scrap dir. I was also using
a task window for output.

Ah wait, I've just looked back and noticed that my program
(which was running the ANT whois binary) wrapped the call
in a function that returned false if it was not successful.
The main program then evaluates the function up to five
times to get a successful reply before giving up and this
would have hidden any one off problems from me. Sorry.

Perhaps you could do the same kind of thing.

PS. Is anyone working on a port of Perl 5.6 ?
