In the "normal" setup, Rivendell would feed one channel (or more) on a
mixer/board and the mic would feed another. The listener would hear
the mix from the board.

Using Rivendell on jack as below, you can do the mic feed and mixing
in software.

That is one way to do it but not what you must use. For instance, you
could take your off air signal into a tuner/receiver and feed that
into the soundcard of a another cheap box running darkice and stream
that to shoutcast/icecast. Doing it this way, you could do it from
another building even.
