The terminal is probably taking your password, just not displaying it. By
default, at terminal password prompts, there is no indication given that you
are typing, but if you enter your password and hit enter, it should proceed.
This is for security to avoid displaying your plain text password to the
person standing behind you, etc.

You can test this theory by typing a few random keys at the prompt and
hitting enter. You should get a password failed type error response and it
should prompt you again.

It may not look like it's taking input, but it is.
