Well, I nailed it down. Shortly after setup, I used the computer to run a fast 
Internet session using the live "PUPPY WARY" Linux CD. What I did not realize 
was that the live disc overwrote the computer's name to "puppypc", so the name 
"localhost" wasn't worth a nickel. IF I wanted anything to work, I had to 
create "puppypc" under RDADMIN>MANAGE HOSTS and switch to that.

Rather insidious that a live disc meant to be used for a short hop would wreak 
so much havoc.
