Hi all, Due to an unexpected wiring fault and the untimely death of my broadcast hardware encoder this week, I had to bypass most of my broadcast rack which included a silence detector and a compressor amongst a myriad of other odds and ends. Thankfully we have a backup IP Codec but the hardware will be out of action for a while so as a temporary measure I set up a darkice/icecast server which is acting as a relay source for Live 365 as well as our satellite/short wave broadcaster.
I noticed that on the wiki, edcast crops up quite often. I've done some research but it seems that edcast is kind of dead for linux? Does anyone know the pros and cons of edcast vs darkice? Everything was going fine with darkice until it had been broadcasting for approx 12 hours and promptly killed itself. I think this might simply be due to a bug in version 0.2 that is in the Ubuntu repos. I've installed v 1.1 from source but have yet to have the required 12 hours elapse. Has anyone come across this issue? I also noticed that you can hook up darkice to JACK which means I can make use of the JACK Rack LADSPA plugins for the compressors/limiters that I've lost due to the wiring fault. I've only got my own quick and dirty setup to go by but I haven't noticed any increased CPU load or latency by enabling the compressor plugins. Does anyone have any experience with that in a live setup vs a traditional hardware compressor? Finally, although I've configured darkice and icecast to be as low latency as possible (turning off burst in icecast and lowering the buffer to 1 second in darkice which is the minimum), every media player I've used seems to buffer 5 - 10 seconds before playing. Can anyone recommend any players that I can lower the buffered amount or is there something I've overlooked in icecast/darkice? Please note I haven't hooked up Rivendell's now and next to this yet as I've yet to bring Riv into production.
