Dear BIll, Not sure but I dont think root has a password unless you change it...
When I enter the sequence you have I get a password prompt (Enter Password:). This is normal because you didn't give it a password - mysql is the database it will try to use. Just hit Enter at the Password prompt and you should be able to get in unless you changed root's password........if you did change it then you need to enter it at the prompt.... Hope that helps.
