Hi,
It sounds like your sound card order (s) got swapped around. This can happen anytime you install a different sound card and / or reboot with Ubuntu when working with more then 1 card.
To specify what sound card should get what number, have a look at the page in the wiki at:
You'll need to set up which card gets which number.
If you want, go to a terminal and type:
cat /proc/asound/modules
and copy / paste the output here, we'll see what we can do to help.
As for low volumes, it is probably just the volume on the card in question is set low. You can fix this with something like alsamixer. To use alsamixer with multiple sound cards, from a terminal type:
alsamixer -c 0
where the number is the sound card you want to control (so for example, if you wanted to control Sound Card #2, you'd type alsamixer -c 2)
