Does the target directory exist ? Assuming your target is /var/target do cd var then ls -dl tar* You should get something that looks like drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2010-02-25 12:14 target/ In this case, it listed, so we know it exists. The permissioning tells us it's a directory, that the owner ( root ) has read, write, and execute permission. The group ( also root ) has read and execute, but not write, permission. Everyone else has read and execute, but not write, permission.
