Morten I had a similar problem with SUSE 11.2 sometime ago which I solved by replacing the sound card. I used an old Soundblaster live sound card for testing.
I am not sure how easy it is to do using VirtualBox though as I understand VirtualBox emulates the sound card in the target system (SUSE 11.4 in your case). I'd have a look in that area first.
