Likely something completely unrelated to MAD.  Installing Rivendell from source 
can be quite an intricate process -- there's much more to it than just building 
the sources; you have to configure accounts and such on the system.  Go through 
the 'INSTALL' and 'UPGRADING' notes carefully and remember that syslog is your 
friend.  If all else fails, try starting each daemon in sequence from the 
command line ('caed', 'ripcd', 'rdcatchd') until you find the culprit.
