MySQL is actually quite capable in this regard and many outfits are doing it, 
but I agree that finding the docs online can be extremely difficult.  However, 
I've found the following to be quite helpful:

Written by many of the engineers that actually implemented the relevant 
features in MySQL.  Highly recommended.
