Sounds like it would be easier to use alsamixer and just up the volume system 
wide (if you still have any headroom left).

I know this isn't strictly what you guys are talking about. But I was
wanting to boost the level of all my audio from -13dbfs to -10dbfs
I can change the default levels in rdadmin to -10dbfs ... but then any
new audio starts to red line in the vu meter on rdairplay.
Is there a way to boost the overall audio level in my library and
adjust the vu meter to keep it the same vu reading.

I'm still using rivendell 1.72 on Ubuntu 10.04.
