Could be, but if playout is also foobar then I'd be suspecting permissions on '/var/snd'. Owner and group should match those specified in rd.conf(5) and be mode 770. You'll also want to be sure that those accounts actually exist and that the UIDs and GIDs agree between the server and the clients. They should be configured as 'system' accounts that are not actually used by any 'real' user. This is different from how things were in 1.x.
