This may not be the answer you are looking for, but for our 
outpost studios we use ogg-vorbis files in /var/snd, so they can 
be transferred efficiently over the web.

It's really simple ..

"oggenc *.wav"
.. generates the ogg files.

Then rename them to *.wav .
