Hi,

Just as an update, since I tried this, the Raspberry pi team enabled 
turbo mode by default which gives you approx 1Ghz of CPU.

The revised model B also comes with 512MB instead of 256MB RAM. So I 
guess there is scope to revisit Rivendell on this thing.

I've never used Arch so I can't really advise on that.
