So I've kinda started this little informal spare-time project to (at least
track down all the pieces of) a radio station in a box, based on Rivendell.

A few people expressed interest, so I thought I'd toss a short update over
the wall.

I've located the Vestax VCM-600 USB/Midi control surface, which looks like
a 6-channel air mixer, complete with per-fader Play and Stop/Recue buttons,
though I haven't yet looked into how you'd capture the various controller
messages and route them to the proper pieces of software.

I've confirmed that it's possible to manhandle the crosspoints inside
JACK from a tool other than the Patchbay 'draw lines" interface it comes
with, so it should be possible to simulate both "channel input selector"
for those for whom 6 inputs aren't enough, and "program/audition/cue" for
everyone else.  :-)

Additionally, X-keys makes a bunch of really nice multi-button control
surfaces, with relegendable keys and 2-color LED annunciators, making
possible the traditional routing-switcher control matrix interface;
again, this will require writing some code.

If you're aiming for "direct-to-net", but still need a way to get a
good mic in for announce, these are surprisingly decent for $20:

My mic is a Peavey 520 (which is actually a kickdrum mic, but "looks
right" on my homemade, used-to-be-a-luxo-lamp arm :-), and things
I've recorded through that chain sounded good enough to pass muster
with people I know who have done VO and station engineering for
a living.

I'm also a fair hand with Asterisk and Freeswitch, so I'm looking into
telephone interfacing for both hybrid and IFB usage. The advantage here
will be that you'll stay 4-wire right into the terminal device, so
you won't need a "hybrid" per se. You'll still need mix-minus, of
course...

I think that's everything so far.

I'm largely a designer/analyst, so if you're a coder, and you saw
something on this list that rings your chimes, do please let me know.
People like me are the red-headed stepchildren of FOSS development. :-}

My long-term goal, I suppose, is to update/replace the packaged appliance
distribution, making sure what comes of it is something that can install
itself. That might be interesting, because I hate Ubuntu with a passion.

(You ever try to find an xterm on the average Ubuntu desktop? :-)

Cheers,
