You might also like to try TestDisk from CG software (it's open source and
multi-platform):

..or ddrescue from those GNU folks - has recovered a couple of hard disks
for me in the past by persistent re-reading of failed sectors.

Hopefully you'll get an image file (or most of one) that can be searched
for data (TestDisk is good for this bit).
