We also had that around version 1.6 on Opensuse 10 with a Delta 1010. This happened after we moved our /var/snd to an NFS share (over a slow and busy network) - so our solution was to move back to a disk in the machine doing the recording. At the time, Fred pointed out that NFS uses UDP by default and it could have been packet loss/delay causing the issue. Certainly taking network out of the equation fixed it for us :)
