Recently went through the same scenario.. The card may well be set to deliver +4 out although I would question the dbm because the actual level and impedance may not meet that standard.
BUT Rivendell is set up to run at -13 so '0' on the Rivendell meter is 13 db below the +4 output = -10 peak when all the gains on the sound card are set at maximum. Our M-Audio actually delivers a bit less than +4dbm into 600 ohms, we estimate about 6db which may be a mis match, but not one noticeably affecting the frequency response. Probably the M-Audio is 1k or so and a 600 ohm input is going to involve that loss. We installed a device with gain to deliver +4 and that solved the problem, which is not a problem so much as that's what we are dealing with and if you need more gain just wire in a pad with gain! M-Audio performs well on record and replay but it's outputs are set for consumer gear 'line level' based on digital '0' I gather the pro card has a gain stage on the output, as you might expect, so the output can be set up for the desk it's going in to. Took me a while to get my head around it but it's all logical. regards Robert On Fri, 2013-08-23 at 13:22 -0400, Rob Landry wrote: > As I write this, I'm sitting in front of a Rivendell machine with an > M-Audio Delta 192 card that supposedly puts out balanced audio at +4 dBm. > It feeds a Broadcast Tools SS16.4 switcher that chooses among Rivendell, a > live studio feed, and several remote feeds, all of which are nominally +4 > dBm. > > The Rivendell output is typically 6 to 10 dB lower than the other sources. > This would not normally bother me, but all the Rivendell machines I've > built, whether with Audioscience cards or some other professional grade > card, seem to put out audio at levels well below +4. > > At one station, I have the AudioScience card output on the Rivendell > machine feeding a Radio Systems console input strapped for consumer level, > as otherwise the operators complain about having to turn the gain all the > way up. > > Is it just me?
